Preparing for Your Baby

Choosing a healthcare provider to guide you through your pregnancy is an important decision for every woman. A fertility specialist can help women become pregnant. A maternal-fetal medicine physician will assist women who may be considered a high-risk pregnancy and those who might have an unexpected health situation arise during pregnancy.

Many women rely on their OB/GYN to oversee their pregnancy care. It’s important to choose a physician who is in your insurance network, which typically means your insurance will cover more of their services. This also applies to the hospital you choose. You may also want to check with family and friends for recommendations based on who they liked and trusted for their pregnancies.

Throughout your pregnancy visits, you will have many conversations with your physician. Some important topics to discuss during your appointments include:

  • Pregnancy plan such as recommended vitamins, exercise and lifestyle considerations
  • Delivery plan, which includes pain management during labor and what to expect during labor and delivery
  • Any anticipated complications or health issues such as gestational diabetes
  • Consideration for breastfeeding or bottle feeding
  • Signs of labor, what to expect and when to go to the hospital

Whether you're preparing to welcome your first child or another addition to the family, The Birthplace offers up-to-date information in childbirth preparation classes on Tuesdays and Saturdays throughout the year.

Breastfeeding classes are also available. During this time, you can learn how to position your baby, maintain a good supply of milk and solve common problems. This class should be taken before the birth of your baby.

Labor and Delivery

When it’s time to deliver your baby, patients typically arrive through the Birthplace entrance, adjacent to the main entrance. A labor and delivery nurse will meet you and your support person in the lobby and escort you to your room.

Our labor and delivery unit offers:

  • 24/7 laborist program
  • 24/7 Neonatologists on-site
  • Level III Intensive Care Nursery (NICU)
  • Donor breast milk available in NICU (based on criteria)
  • Antepartum care for high-risk pregnancies
  • Breastfeeding support
  • Delayed infant bathing
  • Golden hour/skin-to-skin bonding
  • Cord-blood banking collection (previously discussed and arranged with your obstetrician)
  • Placenta donation coordination
  • Hospital-grade breast pumps
  • Infant security system throughout the Birthplace
  • Special lullaby chime heard overhead throughout the hospital to celebrate the birth of your baby
  • Exclusive Pelvic Floor Therapy
  • Wireless fetal monitors
  • Specialized equipment for optimized birth positioning

Our Birthplace team supports the Golden Hour, which is a time of parental bonding through skin-to-skin contact soon after birth. This is optional for families, but many find it beneficial.

Skin-to-skin helps the baby regulate body temperature, heart rate, and respiratory rate. If breastfeeding is your preference, skin-to-skin bonding increases breast milk production. Your baby will be assessed, measured, and bathed in the comfort of your room.

Antepartum care for high-risk pregnancies

Some women are at a higher-risk throughout their pregnancy. The Birthplace at Spring Valley Hospital works closely with obstetricians and maternal-fetal medicine specialists to care for patients who may need to be hospitalized due to medical or obstetric complications or conditions.

Birthparents are monitored closely throughout their hospital stay by our experienced labor and delivery nurses while under the care of a provider. For comfort and convenience, our private antepartum rooms feature natural sunlight, Wi-Fi and room service with an enhanced menu.

Members of our NICU team participate in the delivery of high-risk mothers and babies. While the Labor and Delivery team focuses on the mother, the NICU team focuses on the baby (or babies).

After Delivery

Couplet care

Spring Valley provides couplet care, in which one nurse provides nursing care, education and support for both the birthparents and baby in our Couplet Care. Having a baby close to the bedside at all times allows birthparents to focus on development and get to know her baby’s personality and patterns. During your stay, our couplet care nurses will perform a bedside shift report and round on you and your baby approximately every hour, unless you have special requests (request to receive extra rest).

Parents will also receive a worksheet for the baby’s birth certificate. The birth certificate clerk will review and submit all the information electronically to the State of Nevada.

Once your obstetrician and pediatrician have officially discharged both you and your baby, you are ready to return home. Someone needs to bring an appropriately sized car seat as part of the discharge and going-home process. Car seats must be buckled into the vehicle prior to departure by a family member.

We are dedicated to supporting all mothers in their decision to breastfeed. We offer breastfeeding classes to help you learn how to position your baby, maintain a good supply of milk and solve common problems. This class should be taken before the birth of your baby.

Birth Tissue Enhances and Heals Lives

New law requires information be given to pregnant patients

Expectant mothers can choose to donate birth tissue following the delivery of their healthy newborn(s) in a Nevada-licensed freestanding birthing center or hospital. Birth tissue, which includes amniotic membrane and fluid; placenta; umbilical cord tissue and umbilical veins; chorionic membrane; cord blood and connective tissue contained in the umbilical cord called “Wharton’s Jelly”; or any other tissue derived from a live birth provides nutrients and protection to support fetal development in the womb and is normally discarded after birth. These birth tissues, made up of proteins, growth factors, cytokines and extracellular matrix molecules have been found to stimulate cell regeneration, reduce inflammation and expedite recovery times when used in regenerative therapy as tissue grafts.

Donated birth tissues have been used for many years in various medical procedures and therapies, including (but not limited to) wound healing, ophthalmic procedures, skin grafting, spinal surgeries and sports injuries. Birth tissue donation is safe for mothers and babies, and there is no cost to the mother for giving this gift of healing. The donation and utilization of birth tissue is regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and standards for the donation of birth tissue are provided by the American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB).

Nevada entities accredited by the American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB) for the acquisition or collection of birth tissue are listed at dpbh.nv.gov/hospitals and dpbh.nv.gov/birthingcenters. At this time, there is only one such entity (Nevada Donor Network) but others will be added as requested by such entities, as required by Assembly Bill 154). The bill also requires a hospital or a physician practicing in the area of obstetrics and gynecology to provide a patient who is pregnant with a link to or a printed copy of that list.
