Minimally Invasive Surgery
Having orthopedic surgery used to mean spending several days in a hospital and weeks in recovery; the surgeon made long incisions that cut through muscle. Today, many (but not all) procedures can be done with tiny incisions, known as minimally invasive surgery. This type of surgery may lead to faster healing and less scarring. Using advanced technology, surgeons make small pencil-sized holes in the body while video equipment is used to provide a magnified view of the surgical site. Instruments are used to perform the surgery through the incisions; this usually results in smaller scars, less time in the hospital and a faster recovery and return to work and daily activities.
Hip replacement surgery and spinal surgery are two types of orthopedic procedures that have been revolutionized by minimally invasive surgery. In anterior hip replacement surgery, the surgeon makes a tiny incision at the front of the hip that leaves muscles intact. This results in minimal scarring, often fewer complications, usually a shorter hospital stay and often a more rapid return to daily activities.
