Arthur Fusco, MD, will present a free 30-minute seminar on hernias and hernia treatment options on Thursday, December 14 from 5:30 to 6 p.m. in Conference Room B at Spring Valley Hospital.
Hernias are caused by pressure and a weakness in the muscle. Some hernias may be caused by lifting heavy objects, constipation, diarrhea or heredity. Symptoms may include a painless lump or a tender bulge. Hernias are typically repaired through minimally invasive surgery.
Free, private hernia checks will be performed by Dr. Fusco from 6 to 7 p.m. You need to reserve your time by registering through this event. Space is limited.
Those undergoing a screening should wear loose-fitting clothing around the abdominal area. Screenings will take about 10 minutes.
Minimally Invasive Surgical Options for Hernias
One of the minimally invasive options for hernia surgery is using robotic-assisted surgery. During this procedure, the surgeon uses a three-dimensional, high-definition camera for a magnified view of a hernia. The surgeon sits at a console and performs surgery through several small incisions of the belly button utilizing tiny, flexible instruments. The use of robotic-assisted surgery helps with the precise repair. While each patient is unique, in general, small incisions used in minimally invasive surgery can results in less blood loss, less post-operative pain and a faster return to everyday activities.
Individual results may vary. There are risks associated with any surgical procedure. Talk with your doctor about these risks to find out if minimally invasive surgery is right for you.
