Spring Valley Hospital Awarded Total Hip and Knee Replacement Certification from The Joint Commission
Spring Valley Hospital Medical Center earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Total Hip and Knee Replacement Certification by demonstrating continuous compliance with its performance standards. The Gold Seal is a symbol of quality that reflects a healthcare organization’s commitment to providing safe and quality patient care.
The certification, offered in collaboration with the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, focuses on the pre-surgical orthopedic consultation to the intraoperative, hospitalization or ambulatory surgical center admission, rehabilitation activities, and follow-up visit with the orthopedic surgeon.

Spring Valley Hospital underwent a rigorous on-site review on December 28, 2021. During the visit, Spring Valley Hospital program members provided the surveyors with information and examples of evidence-based measures including venous thrombosis prevention, early mobility from the day of surgery, perceptions of the patients’ experience and examples of comprehensive total joint replacement education. To better assist patients, a pre-operative Joint Camp educational program is available for all elective hip and knee patients, along with post-operative sessions during hospitalization.
“Total knee and hip replacements can vastly improve a person’s quality of life,” said Leonard Freehof, CEO of Spring Valley Hospital. “Our team focuses on multiple facets of the surgical process, from patient and family education to a focus on post-operative therapy to keep the joints moving and beginning the recovery and strengthening process. We have been recertified for this prestigious award multiple times since 2017, and it showcases our commitment to positive patient outcomes after they’ve had total joint replacement surgery at Spring Valley Hospital.”
The Joint Commission standards are developed in consultation with healthcare experts and providers, measurement experts and patients. The reviewer also conducted on-site observations and interviews.
“Total Hip and Knee Replacement Certification recognizes healthcare organizations committed to fostering continuous quality improvement in patient safety and quality of care,” says Mark Pelletier, RN, MS, Chief Operating Officer, Accreditation and Certification Operations, and Chief Nursing Executive, The Joint Commission. “We commend Spring Valley Hospital for using certification to reduce variation in its clinical processes and to strengthen its program structure and management framework for orthopedic patients.”
