Childbirth Education

The Maternity Center at Spring Valley Hospital Medical Center offers classes that can help you and your partner prepare for the birth of your child. To register for any of the classes listed below, call 702-388-4888.

Childbirth Classes 2011 and 2012

peapod babiesGet prepared for the birth of your child in this eight-hour course that meets two-hours per evening on four consecutive Tuesdays. Or, if it's more convenient, you can also take this class in a single Saturday session.

This interactive class is taught by a registered nurse and is designed to help first-time parents have a more comfortable experience during pregnancy, labor and delivery. Everyone who attends will learn about the stages of labor, stress relaxation skills, medications that may be used, epidurals and cesarean birth.

The class includes lectures and discussions, videos and time to practice relaxation techniques. Women attending this class should dress comfortably and bring two pillows. Labor partners are encouraged to attend these classes.

starYou should take this class one to two months before your due date, and complete the class at least two to three weeks before you are due to give birth. The class includes a tour of the Maternity Center.

Cost: The cost to attend this class is $40 per couple.
Location: Childbirth classes are held in Classroom B at Spring Valley Hospital Medical Center.

Breastfeeding

babyBreastfeeding a newborn can be challenging during the first few weeks of his or her life. In this class, a certified breastfeeding lactation consultant can help you learn how to position your baby, maintain a good supply of milk and solve common problems. Your partner is encouraged to attend.

Cost: The cost to attend this class is $15.
Location: Childbirth classes are held in Classroom B at Spring Valley Hospital Medical Center.
Advance registration is required.

Class dates (English):
Saturdays (10:00 a.m. to noon)

Class dates (Spanish):
Saturdays (5:00 to 7:00 p.m.)

Please Note:  English and Spanish classes are held on the same day.

Infant CPR

This three-hour course includes first aid for breathing emergencies and obstructed airways, as well as instruction in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for infants. Successful participants will receive a certification card from the American Red Cross.

Cost: The cost to attend this class is $25 per person.
Location: Childbirth classes are held in Classroom B at Spring Valley Hospital Medical Center.
Advance registration is required.

Tour the Maternity Center

Get a comprehensive tour of the Maternity Center at Spring Valley Hospital Medical Center, including our all-private Labor, Delivery and Recovery rooms and our postpartum patient care rooms. You'll see our Well-baby Level II Special Care Nursery and our Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for babies who need special care. Your partner is encouraged to attend this tour, however children are not permitted on the tour.

Cost: Free.
Location: Meet in the waiting room at the Women's Center.
Advance registration is required.

Tour dates:
Once a month on Sunday (3:00 p.m.)
